Hamedorea

Hamedorea. Home care and cultivation. Transplant and reproduction

Hamedorea (Chamaedorea) or bamboo palm is an unpretentious shade-tolerant palm that grows well in indoor conditions. This palm is native to the mountainous regions of Mexico, South and Central America. In nature, these are small graceful palms up to 2 meters high and up to 3 cm thick stems.

Among the wide variety of indoor plants, this particular type of palm is very popular. Hamedorei can be found not only in an apartment, these palm trees often become an adornment of a large hall, office space with high spacious rooms and a winter garden.

Location and lighting

Indoor palms should not be in a completely dark corner or in direct sunlight. Lighting should be moderate (you can use a place in partial shade). The appearance of the hamedorea will depend on the correct lighting. Bright rays of the sun will "burn" the leaves, making them unattractive.

Since chamedorea grows to a decent size and occupies a rather large space, choose a place for the plant in the corner of the room (near the window openings) or in the wall between the windows. In such a place, it will look great and will not interfere with others. This unpretentious plant can grow well under artificial lighting.

When choosing a place for chamedorea, it is worth remembering that a sharp change in high and low temperatures will negatively affect the condition of the palm tree. It should be located in a place where there will be no cold drafts.

In the warm season, the room needs to be ventilated, and it is better to take the plant out to the veranda or balcony so that it can enjoy the fresh air.

Temperature

Hamedorea grows well at normal room temperatures. The optimum temperature in summer is 16-20 degrees, but in winter the palm tree needs a lower temperature - 12-15 degrees. If the room cools down gradually, this will not affect the palm tree in any way, even if the air temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius. The plant needs regular ventilation for full growth and development.

Watering

A palm tree should not dry out an earthen lump, but it is also not worth pouring the plant abundantly

The earthen lump should not dry out near the palm tree, but it is not worth pouring the plant abundantly. Wet and waterlogged soil is a prerequisite for pests and diseases. The soil should only be slightly moist. Water that will accumulate in the sump must be drained regularly.

In the summer, watering is needed more often than in the winter. In winter, the plant's development process slows down, therefore, watering should be reduced.

Air humidity

Air humidity is of great importance for hamedorea. If the air in the room is too dry, then dark spots may appear on the leaves of the palm tree, and a dangerous pest, a spider mite, may also start. To prevent this, it is necessary to use daily spraying of the plant. Such a shower will not only moisturize the plant itself, but also increase the humidity of the air.

The soil

A soil mixture for growing chamedorea can be purchased at a flower shop; universal soil for horse plants is quite suitable. But you can prepare such a mixture yourself: humus, peat, river sand and sod land. Each component is taken in equal parts. Good drainage must be poured into the bottom of the container.

Top dressing and fertilizers

Top dressing of the chamedorea palm tree is needed only during the period of active growth - from April to September. At this time, you need to apply fertilizer specially designed for palm trees or any complex mineral fertilizer twice a month.

Transfer

Some growers recommend replanting palms depending on its age: young plants - every year, and adults - every three years.

Some growers recommend replanting chamedorea depending on its age: young plants every year, and adults every three years. Professionals with extensive experience and experience nevertheless offer to engage in a hamedorea transplant only if necessary.

The growth and development of a plant can become such a necessity. If the palm tree gets cramped in a small flower pot, then you need to transfer it to a large container. With age, the plant will need to be transplanted into a real tub or barrel. It is rather difficult to transplant an adult plant: it becomes heavy in weight and too bulky. In such cases, try replacing the transplant by updating the topsoil.

An urgent need to transplant a palm tree will be the presence of a disease or a large number of pests, as well as acidification of the soil. If the situation is not critical, then the best time for this process is the first spring month, when the active growth of the plant has not yet begun.

Breeding methods of hamedorea

Reproduction methods

Observing all the rules for caring for chamedorea, you can get a wonderful flowering and numerous basal processes as a reward. With their help, chamedorea can be easily propagated. The basal shoots must be planted in the prepared soil in a separate container.

You can propagate the palm tree and dividing the bush. An adult palm bush is carefully removed from the pot and divided, together with the earthen clod, into individual plants. The shoots planted in this way take root well and grow well.

The most troublesome and difficult method of reproduction is considered to be seed. It is used only if there are no shoots or the plant is too large, which makes it difficult to use, for example, dividing a bush.

It is very important that the seeds are fresh. You can be sure of this only if you collect seeds from your plant. Purchased seeds may be old and will not work as expected.

The seeds should be collected and immediately soaked for about five days in a growth stimulant or regular water. Next, carefully remove the soft shell from each seed. Under this soft layer there is also a hard one, the integrity of which needs to be slightly destroyed (for example, using a triangular small file). Then the seeds are planted in prepared soil and covered with glass or transparent film. The soil should be moistened regularly and the container should be ventilated. The first shoots appear depending on the growing conditions - from one to six months.

Diseases and pests

The plant can dry out the tips of the leaves - this indicates insufficient air humidity.

With good care of the palm tree, pests are not terrible. But one of them, spider mite, can bring a lot of trouble to the plant. If it is detected, action must be taken immediately.

The tips of the leaves of the plant may dry out - this indicates insufficient air humidity. The leaves of the purchased palm began to turn yellow - this is how the period of getting used to new living conditions passes. The periodically dying lower leaves of a plant are an absolutely normal process.

Types of hamedorea

Hamedorea is a plant in the family of which there are more than a dozen species and varieties.

Hamedorea is a plant in the family of which there are more than a dozen species and varieties. But for growing in indoor conditions, 3 types are most suitable.

Hamedorea Ernest-August

It is a bushy plant that grows to just over one meter in height. The trunk is dense reed-shaped, the leaves are two-lobed (usually about 10 pieces), the flowers are red.In the nodules of the stems there are aerial roots that simplify the breeding procedure. This is the hallmark of this type of palm tree.

Hamedorea graceful

It is a relatively tall palm tree (up to 1.5 meters in height). It has a thin, bare trunk (one or more) with feathery dark green leaves, slightly pointed (approximately six leaves on each trunk). It blooms with red-orange inflorescences.

Hamedorea one-color

This type of palm is considered the most unpretentious and hardy. Has similar features with graceful chamedorea. It blooms with yellow flowers. The trunk of this palm tree consists of internodes of dead leaves.

It is very likely that the reason for the appearance of brown spots is too dry air in the room where your plant is grown.

There is no way to save, in that case. You cut off the point of growth of the palm tree (and this is the top-central leaf), for palm trees this is the only point of growth. It will not grow, it will die over time (as the remaining leaves die off), if there are no lateral processes with their own growth points.

Better buy a young plant, it is often on sale, in flower shops, and in supermarkets. With seeds, as indicated in the article, it is troublesome to contact and, when growing from seeds, you will wait a long time for decorativeness to acquire. And seeds can also be purchased in online stores.

In order for Hamedorea to begin to bush, you need to prune the top in the spring. There will be no side shoots from the bottom, so pinch the vaft at the height where you want to start to bush. Put the cut part in water for rooting. When roots appear, plant it to the mother plant closer to the trunk.

The palm tree stretched out to the ceiling with a bare trunk, only a shaggy bunch at the top, and periodically throws out a flowery bunch with an unpleasant odor. Look like a skinned cat
It's a pity to look, and a pity to throw it away - after all, a living creature. I wanted to cut off the top and put it in the water so that roots would appear, but only my daughter says that Hamidorea is not propagated like that. What to do, tell me?
