Amazing nearby. Someone grows harvests of lemon on the windowsill, someone a tomato, I know a home where cucumbers grow as a beautiful vine. I managed to grow such an unusual root vegetable as ginger. This is just an experiment so far, but it was a success. We know ginger more as a remedy and culinary, but in Holland and some other countries ginger is grown because of its beautiful lush green crown and flowers.
Since it is reliably known that ginger is supplied from very thermophilic countries like India, Jamaica, it is hardly possible to grow it in a garden in our climatic zone, but at home you can try it. Moreover, the very process of observing how the first leaves appear brings great pleasure - the awakening of life and nature is a unique phenomenon.
I chose the "horned root" on the market, sometimes so called ginger, you need to look to ensure that the rhizome is clean, without flaws and with a lot of eyes. At home, I cut the root into plots so that each had a peephole. I chose a couple with good eyes, dried it a little, sprinkled it with root, you can also charcoal.
When choosing dishes, I was guided by a simple calculation, ginger grows shallow and wide, like an iris, so a bowl with a little soil will be enough. I chose the land thoroughly, first I read it, then I thought ten times, as a result I stopped at the fact that I poured a thick layer of drainage on the bottom, poured a mixture of turf soil, sand and peat on top, fluffed it well, ginger loves loose soils. I made small indentations, put my experimental "delenki" and sprinkled it on top with earth, quite a bit.
I read on the Internet that the growing time of the root, that is, from the moment of planting to digging up the grown root, takes from six months to a year, if out of habit I want to harvest the crop in the fall, then I will plant it in winter. Almost higher mathematics 🙂
I put an impromptu pot on the windowsill, covered it with polyethylene on top, I just did not know whether a greenhouse effect was needed or not, I know for sure that watering is needed often, since it grows in the tropics, it means that watering and film are needed. I didn't forget about the lighting either - I substituted, however, the most ordinary table lamp, and screwed a lamp into the base - a 60-watt frosted candle. Happened!
Of course, curiosity intensified every day, and only after 42 days did the first sprout appear! By the way, all the sprouts have sprouted, which means that ginger is unpretentious when grown at home. Next year I will make a beautiful flowerpot along the wall.
Just in case, I purchased mineral fertilizers to enhance root growth, it is often used when transplanting perennial flowers in the fall, they contain a lot of phosphorus and potassium.
In the spring, the sun increased, so in the afternoon he removed the plant from direct rays. Ginger loves partial shade, but squirted from a spray bottle almost every day. Its leaves are interesting, like sedge, elongated and with a rich color. All summer I spent my pot on the balcony, I was not afraid to take it to the dacha, but I didn’t leave it, since I had to drink it almost every day.
No wonder the Dutch love it as a decorative flower! While my "white" root is gaining strength, I need to subtract some of the recipes in which I will use the fruits of my labor.Immediately I stumbled upon the recipe for pickled ginger, all the taste buds worked at once, I will definitely do it, especially since a small jar in a supermarket is not cheap.
Ginger tea is prepared simply - we throw small pieces into a saucepan and cook for 10-20 minutes and that's it, the tea is ready, add cinnamon, lemon wedges and honey there. It should be delicious.
