Reproduction of spathiphyllum

Reproduction of spathiphyllum by cuttings, seeds, dividing the bush

The indoor flower spathiphyllum has long been very popular and respected by flower growers for its many advantages. It combines attractiveness and beauty with the ability to purify the air in living quarters. Spathiphyllum - an unpretentious plant that multiplies easily and does not require much experience in floriculture. If you have an adult specimen, you can easily get planting material in the form of seeds, cuttings or a divided bush.

Seed propagation

This method is difficult and time consuming. The process of growing spathiphyllum from seeds will take a lot of patience and time. Seeds lose their germination very quickly and cannot be stored. It is recommended to sow them immediately after collection. And in order for the seeds to ripen, you first need to pollinate a flowering houseplant. Since this is a complex and lengthy occupation, it is much easier to purchase seeds in specialized shops for flower growers. The germination rate of even the freshest seeds is about half, so when buying planting material, it is very important to pay attention to its shelf life.

For sowing seeds, you can use a small container (like a plate or saucer), and a mixture of equal parts of peat and sand is suitable as a soil. The conditions for germinating seeds should be greenhouse, with an air temperature of 24-25 degrees. Watering the soil is carried out by spraying. When placing a container in a mini-greenhouse, it is very important to carry out regular ventilation in it. An excess of moisture on the soil surface can contribute to the development of mold, which will lead to the death of the seed.

Reproduction by dividing the bush

Reproduction by dividing the bush

This method is very convenient and easy to carry out. For an adult spathiphyllum, it is also useful, as it "thinns out" the dense thickets of a mature flower. The plant grows very quickly and numerous young rosettes absorb all nutrients from the soil, depriving the mother plant. Dividing the bush as needed has a beneficial effect on the further growth and development of spathiphyllum.

To carry out the procedure for separating young plants, it is necessary to follow the recommendations of experienced florists.

The division of the bush should be carried out in early spring, before the beginning of the growing season. The root system of each cut must be very strong and free from damage. Delenka is ready for independent growth if it has three leaf outlets that are already well developed. When planting, the root collar of young plants should be at the same soil level as that of the mother bush.

The flower container for planting young spathiphyllum should be of small volume, because the root part will actively develop in deep and wide pots, and this will lead to rapid growth of the leafy part and a delay in the flowering process.

The division of the root system of an adult plant must be carried out with minimal trauma to the roots and the entire flower as a whole. Before starting the procedure, it is recommended to water the soil abundantly in a flower pot, which will facilitate easier extraction of the flower along with the earthen clod and give the roots time to absorb moisture in order to reduce their fragility.

After removing the plant, you need to carefully rinse all the roots from the ground and, if possible, untangle. In this form, the root part will be easier and more correct to divide. It is recommended to sprinkle the cuts on the roots with crushed or activated charcoal and leave to dry for a while.

Before planting each cut, you need to carefully examine them and remove dried or rotted parts of the root system and leaves. Each young plant is planted in a small individual container. Fragile roots need to be spread over the soil surface and carefully sprinkled with soil mixture, and then slightly compact the soil.

Soil composition: leafy soil (1 part), peat soil (1 part), sod land (1 part), river coarse sand (1/2 part). For planting delots, you can also purchase a ready-made soil mixture intended for plants of the Aroid family.

Propagation by cuttings

Propagation by cuttings

Cuttings are leaf rosettes separated from the adult spathiphyllum. In the presence of small roots, the cuttings can be immediately planted in the soil, and if they are absent, they must be placed in a container with water and activated carbon until the root part is formed.

Faster root formation on young plants occurs in special substrates (for example, in perlite or coarse-grained river sand, in high-moor peat or sphagnum moss), if the flower container is placed in a greenhouse or under a glass cover to maintain a high level of humidity.
