Onions have long been considered an unpretentious culture, but even it needs various feeding. It would be ideal to take care of future onion beds in the fall and in advance add cow dung or bird droppings, compost or humus to the soil. But if this did not work out, then fertilizers with minerals or on the basis of organic matter, as well as feeding of a mixed type, will come to the rescue. And this will already be in the onion growing season.
Top dressing for onions is applied two or three times throughout the season. The first fertilizer must be nitrogen-containing. It is applied approximately 2 weeks after planting. Nitrogen stimulates the growth of green mass. After another 2-3 weeks, a second top dressing is introduced, which includes not only nitrogen, but also potassium, phosphorus.
On fertile soils, these two dressings will be enough, but for depleted land, during the formation of the bulb, a third dressing (potassium-phosphorus) will be required, only this time without nitrogen.
Fertilizing onions with mineral fertilizers
Each recipe is based on ten liters of water.
First option:
- Top dressing 1 - urea (a tablespoon) and Vegeta fertilizer (2 tablespoons).
- Top dressing 2 - 1 tablespoon Agricola-2, recommended for garlic and onions.
- Top dressing 3 - superphosphate (tablespoon) and two spoons of "Effecton-0".
Second option:
- Top dressing 1 - potassium chlorine (20 grams), superphosphate (about 60 grams), ammonium nitrate (25-30 grams).
- Top dressing 2 - potassium chlorine (30 grams), superphosphate (60 grams) and ammonium nitrate (30 grams).
- Top dressing 3 - similar to the first top dressing, only without ammonium nitrate.
Third option:
- Top dressing 1 - ammonia (3 tablespoons).
- Top dressing 2 - one tablespoon of table salt and ammonium nitrate, as well as manganese crystals (no more than 2-3 pieces).
- Top dressing 3 - 2 tablespoons of superphosphate.
Top dressing of onions with mixed fertilizers
- Top dressing 1 - urea (1 tablespoon) and infusion of bird droppings (about 200-250 milliliters).
- Top dressing 2 - 2 tablespoons of nitrofask.
- Top dressing 3 - superphosphate (about 20 grams) and potassium salt (about 10 grams).
Feeding onions with organic fertilizers
- Top dressing 1 - 250 milliliters of mullein or bird droppings infusion.
- Top dressing 2 - you must mix 1 liter of herbal infusion with 9 liters of water. It is not recommended to use nettle for the preparation of herbal infusion.
- Top dressing 3 - wood ash (about 250 grams). When preparing top dressing, the water should be heated almost to a boil. Fertilizer must be infused within 48 hours.
Fertilizers are applied during watering, but only after sunset or in cloudy weather. On a sunny day, fertilizers can kill vegetable plants. The liquid dressing should be applied directly to the bulb and not to the greens. On the next day, it is advisable to wash off the fertilizer residues with plain water.
