Plumeria

Plumeria. Home care

In ancient times, indoor plants were considered natural home decorations, creating an atmosphere of harmony and comfort. The variety of indoor plant species is simply amazing! Depending on tastes and preferences, the home can be furnished with small room friends and larger species, someone prefers exotic flowers that require special care, someone likes unpretentious ordinary species, someone grows medicinal plants in pots, and who something loves cacti... For every amateur or even professional in the field of phytodesign, there is a type and variety of plants suitable for all parameters and requests. The world of indoor plants is something amazing.

In general, not many indoor flowers can boast of a wondrous aroma, or at least a tangible one. Regardless of the beauty and size of the flowering, most indoor plants are odorless, it is rather intuitively guessed, in comparison with the type of flower. Listing indoor flowers with a smell in my head, geranium immediately comes to mind, with its pungent smell, large-flowered stapelia, with a pungent smell of decaying meat. However, there are kinds of flowers with wonderful amazing scents. One of these plants is plumeria. This flower combines both a wonderful appearance and a pleasant aroma.

Plumeria cannot be called a small flower, its dimensions can surprise, it reaches up to two meters in height. Therefore, when starting this type of flower, it is worth considering the size of the dwelling, because in a small room both the flower and the owner of the apartment will be uncomfortable. In addition, one of the basic rules in phytodesign is to observe the proportions of the houseplant and the room in which it is supposed to be kept. Of course, a true fan of plumeria is unlikely to be stopped by such a rule.

Home care

Maintaining a plumeria does not require any special effort or hassle. This indoor flower is very unpretentious, and prefers growing conditions that are not suitable for all "green friends".

Home care

Lighting. The first thing to look out for when growing plumeria is lighting. Getting a flower in the range of direct sunlight is the key to its healthy growth and abundant flowering. So, for this plant it is normal to be in direct sunlight for 6-7 hours a day. Therefore, it is preferable to place the pot with this plant on the south side. The eastern and western ones are also suitable, but the plumeria will bloom worse in such conditions. The north side does not fit at all, the plant will be bad here. You can not wait at all for flowering, and the flower itself will look painful.

There is a little tip-tip for those who have just brought plumeria into the house. You do not need to immediately place the flower on the sunny side. Plumeria needs to adapt to new conditions, that is, some time to get used to a new place in the sun.

Temperature. As for the temperature regime for the flower, here it will also not bring any trouble. Indoor conditions are excellent for the growth and development of plumeria. However, the temperature is below + 17-18˚С, it has an extremely unfavorable effect on the plant. In winter, when the dormant period comes for the flower, it does not need to artificially lower the temperature. In summer, it is recommended to take the flower out into the fresh air (balcony or terrace), but you should beware of drafts.

Rest period. Anyone who started a plumeria should know a few points about the dormant period of the plant. It lasts for about a month. During this time, minor changes may occur to the flower. Plumeria loses some of its leaves, mainly the old lower leaves fall off. The young stay where they are. At the end of the dormant period, the plant is covered with new leaves. And then it starts to bloom. Therefore, you should not panic when you notice baldness in the "green pet", this phenomenon is normal and natural.

Planting and reproduction of a plumeria flower

Watering. Speaking of watering a flower, it is worth focusing on the fact that plumeria does not like to be flooded. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the water in the sump does not stagnate. At the same time, the flower loves regular watering, regardless of the season. In summer, watering should be moderately frequent; in winter, it needs to be watered less often. But, in no case should the soil dry out, even when the flower has a dormant period. Plumeria loves spraying during the period of its growth and flowering, it provides the necessary air humidity. When spraying, it should be borne in mind that moisture should not get into the flowering, so the spraying procedure should be carried out before it starts. And, of course, in the evening, when the sun's rays do not hit the flower, or in the early morning. Since the plant can get severe burns.

Air humidity. To maintain the desired moisture level during flowering, spraying can be replaced with another manipulation - put the pot in a deep tray with raw expanded clay, sand or moss.

Top dressing play an important role in the full development of plumeria. They have an impact on the appearance of the flower and overall health. Experts in the field of indoor floriculture recommend feeding the plumeria with complex fertilizers after the flower leaves dormancy. Nitrogen - excellently affects the stimulation of leaf growth, however, an overdose of this substance is unacceptable for plumeria, since nitrogen inhibits flowering.

Thus, as soon as the crown of the flower takes on a juicy green appearance, it should begin to be fed with fertilizer for flowering plants. The basis of such fertilizers is phosphorus, which stimulates the active growth of buds. This top dressing should be used 2 times a month. If the flower is located outdoors, it is recommended to introduce foliar dressing. That is, spraying with a fertilizer solution diluted in half of the recommended dose. If the flower is in the room, the need for foliar dressing disappears. Experts recommend carrying out root and foliar dressing in turn, but with the same frequency, once every two weeks. In the autumn period, the frequency of fertilizing should be reduced, and with the onset of dormancy, stop altogether.

Transfer. There is one little trick to replanting plumeria to help control plant growth and size. The bottom line is that this plant has a rather powerful root system, it is proportional to the growth of the flower. From this it follows that the larger the pot is transplanted plumeria, the more it grows out. Thus, in order to stop the growth of a flower, you should not increase the size of the pot, you need to carefully reduce the size of the root system. This is done very simply, when the time comes to transplant the "green friend", it must be carefully removed from the container, the roots must be cleaned from the ground and cut 5 centimeters from the bottom and sides.

Or an option for the lazy is to trim the root ball from all sides without clearing the ground. Next, the plant is placed in a clean pot and fresh earth is added. If it is not necessary to restrain the growth of plumeria, the transplant is carried out according to the usual scenario into a larger pot. When the flower outgrows all possible pot sizes and turns into a tub plant, it is recommended to replace the transplant by changing the top layer of the soil. You can easily find it in a flower shop or make it yourself. What is included? Two parts are sod land, one part of humus, one part of peat, one part of sand, and don't forget about drainage.

Tips and tricks on how to properly care for a plumeria flower

Reproduction. Plumeria can be propagated in two ways: growing from seeds or cuttings from tops. The first method is more troublesome and not always effective. The second is much simpler. It is worth noting that a cut plumeria stalk can be stored for quite a long time. Cuttings are harvested during the rest period of the plant and begin to be planted with the onset of warmth or artificially create comfortable conditions for growing. For reproduction, choose semi-lignified cuttings with a length of twenty-five to thirty centimeters. In this case, it is better to remove the sheets so that they do not suck excess moisture, since they will fall off anyway. The cut of the cutting should be oblique to increase the plane.

The most dangerous thing that can happen to the cuttings is decay. To prevent it, it is important to observe the watering regime. After planting, the plant needs to be watered, then watering should be carried out only as the soil is completely dry. The stalk will take a long time to root, it can take as long as three months. Watering can be started to increase with the appearance of leaves, but gently little by little. Once the plant is confidently growing, it can be transplanted into a larger pot.

Bloom. Plumeria begins to bloom in about a year. It is also worth remembering about the earthen mixture for the cutting, it should be light and loose. Perfectly suited for this business: a mixture of poured and peat or "Universal mixture" and vermiculite. The stalk must be deepened by eight to ten centimeters, after dipping the cut in powder to stimulate root formation. All of these can be obtained from a flower shop. The plant should be placed in the light in the warmth.

Pruning. The pruning procedure is very important in the life of plumeria. Firstly, it makes the plant more attractive aesthetically, and secondly, it directly affects the flowering of the plumeria. It is recommended to prune the plant immediately after the rest period, removing all dead and stunted branches. The blackened ends should be trimmed back to healthy tissue.

The pruning procedure is very important in the life of plumeria.

Pests. The main pest of plumeria is spider mite.

Important! Note to everyone who is new to the cultivation of plumeria - its juice is very poisonous, it can cause a burning sensation, an allergic reaction, so it is not recommended to put this plant in a nursery, institutions, and, if possible, protect pets from the flower. All manipulations with the plant are best done with protective gloves.

    Good afternoon!
I would like to ask you for advice on growing plumeria.
The fact is that when I was in Thailand, I always admired this tree. And so, from another trip, I brought the pods of this tree and wanted to germinate them. Those seeds that were planted in the ground until they hatched. But, those that were laid out on a damp napkin, under the film, began to germinate. I would like to know at what stage of germination, and how they need to be planted in the ground.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hello! I grow frangipani (from cuttings). First I powdered it with root and activated charcoal, then covered it with vermiculite. 2-3 weeks have passed, the leaves are already growing. I want to transplant it into a bigger pot, pour drainage at the bottom, then soil for cacti, and, finally, sphagnum moss. There is one problem that worries me - that part of the cutting and 4 cm higher that was in the pot - not hard, but slightly elastic. Does this mean that the stalk is rotting and what to do about it?
