A coffee tree

A coffee tree

Probably every florist - both beginner and experienced - would like to have an exotic coffee tree as a houseplant. But an obstacle to this is often the erroneous opinion that the process of growing a tree at home is supposedly extremely difficult, and incredible care is required. In fact, growing and caring for a coffee tree is no more difficult than other, more familiar plants.

If you follow these simple planting rules, then very soon you will be able to admire the delicate green sprout of the future coffee tree. Let's start with the basics: you can grow a coffee tree at home in two only possible ways - from a seed and a cutting.

Growing a coffee tree from a grain

To do this, you need ordinary coffee beans, which can be purchased in the store (only, of course, not roasted), or beans taken directly from the plant itself (suddenly your relatives or neighbors are happy owners of it). The cultivation method is almost the same as, for example, pomegranate or lemon - there are only a few characteristic features.

Growing a coffee tree from a grain

Since the shell of the coffee bean is very tough, hard and often interferes with the germination of the seed, it is necessary to carry out the so-called scarification before planting. This is the destruction of the shell by a chemical method (solution of hydrochloric or sulfuric acid), or mechanically - the grain must be cut or sawed.

The next step is to soak the grain in a stimulant solution. Well suited "Epin", "Kornevin", "Zircon" or others. It is imperative to plant the seed in soft, loose soil. The pot with the planted seed must be placed in a sunny place so that it germinates as soon as possible, the temperature must be at least 20 degrees.

Growing a coffee tree from a cutting

If you find where to buy a stalk of a coffee tree, then it is better to use this planting method. A tree planted in this way will grow faster, and, therefore, yield faster. The second advantage of this planting method is that the tree will grow in width, not in height, as when planting a seed. Planting a stem of a coffee tree is very simple, there are no differences from other cuttings.

Caring for the coffee tree at home

How to properly land was described above. How to properly care for a coffee tree? Many amateur flower growers, who do not have sufficient personal experience in caring for indoor plants in general, not to mention a coffee tree in particular, draw information from very dubious sources. The consequences of this are very disappointing - people spend incredible efforts, funds, fuss around it, they are almost afraid to breathe near the plant - and the sense from this, at best, is zero.

All this happens because not everyone knows that caring for this seemingly fastidious tree is very, very simple, you just need to adhere to simple rules.

Caring for the coffee tree at home

Landing

The very first step towards a luxurious and fruitful coffee tree in your garden is of great importance - planting, and, in some cases, transplanting the plant. The most basic thing to remember is that the coffee tree grows exclusively in an acidic environment (i.e. ph should be <7). Since in practice it is extremely difficult to determine the acidity of the soil even for an experienced florist, it is recommended to use the following soil composition when planting:

  • Sour peat
  • Humus
  • Leaf land
  • Greenhouse land
  • Sand

It is necessary to mix these components in a ratio of 2: 1: 1: 1: 1. To maintain the acidity and moisture content of the soil, it is recommended to add finely chopped sphagnum moss.

Transfer

As for transplanting a coffee tree - this should be done every year until the tree is three years old, then (then) - once every 2-3 years. At a time when transplanting is not carried out, it is imperative to replace the topsoil once a year.

Do not allow dry air in the room, it is necessary to maintain a sufficiently high humidity. This can be achieved by constantly spraying the plant, but remember - this one action is not always enough. Use this advice: pour pebbles into a deep enough pan, fill it with water, and place a pot with a plant on it. Don't forget to make a good drainage layer.

It is recommended to place the coffee tree on the windows

Location and lighting

Lighting is also important, although far from being of prime importance. It is recommended to place the coffee tree on windows facing south, southwest, southeast. By placing the southern guest on the north window, contrary to popular belief, you will not ruin him, but growth and further development may slow down.

But keep in mind that too much sun exposure can also be harmful, especially for young plants up to two years old. And an adult coffee tree will not be able to form full-fledged inflorescences without enough direct sunlight. However, it is best to start shading the plant after the fruit is set. This is exactly what they do in the homeland of coffee - in the southern countries: other trees are planted around the trees so that they give the plant a saving shade.

Temperature

For normal growth and development in the spring and summer, the plant needs a normal room temperature. In winter, the room where it is located should be cooler, namely from 14 to 15 degrees. But do not forget that it should not fall below +12 degrees.

The room temperature should be normal, room temperature

Watering and humidity

There is nothing special about watering - as with all plants, it should be more abundant in summer and more often than in winter. Of course, when determining the amount to water, proceed from room temperature and avoid excessive dryness or moisture. Watering with soft rain or melt water has a beneficial effect on the coffee tree.

Top dressing

It is better to use mineral liquid fertilizers as top dressing; it is recommended to apply them once every two weeks from April to September, i.e. during the period of the most active growth.

Care problems

It is imperative to remember that the coffee tree should never be rearranged. Even a slight turn of 30 or 40 degrees can provoke foliage to fall. And at the same time, flowering will stop. Therefore, one must be very careful when caring for a coffee tree and do not forget about this feature.

The coffee tree will become a universal decoration of any room and will look great and delight the eye both in a childcare facility, in your own apartment, and at work in the office. If you follow these rules above, you will soon be able to pleasantly surprise your guests with a cup of aromatic coffee, ripened on your own coffee plantation, located right at your home.

The article says: "the coffee tree loves acidic soil with a pH of 7" - this is wrong, this pH is neutral. Sour pH 1 to 8, alkaline pH 9 to 14. Please correct.

My coffee tree has been growing for the fifth year. She planted it with a grain, grew and bloomed for the first time in the fourth year of life, and this year the fruits are already ripening. Tell me how to fertilize the tree during the ripening of the grains? and whether it is necessary to do it at all? If you fertilize, then with what fertilizers and will it not be reflected later on the taste and naturally on human health?

Hello, I bought a tree and when I bought it it had green leaves, but today they immediately changed brown and on one of them there is a little zholtiya arrow, and the rest of the green ones when ordering it was delivered to me without wrapping and I looked at the roots there, and now I'm worried I don’t know what to do? 🙁

Christina, it may well, but ... the lack of natural light is not critical, but it can affect the health of the plant: growth may slow down, etc.

I bought a coffee tree from the store. There are several bushes in the pot. We transplanted everything together into a new pot (as the seller suggested). In the summer they stood on the loggia, grew up, in the fall they brought it into the apartment. After a while, the lower leaves began to darken and wither. What to do? Can plant some bushes?

I bought a pot with 12 coffee sprouts. I planted them and gave some of them to relatives, warning them about the difficulty in caring for them, about daily spraying and preventing the leaves from turning black. Began a long, about seven to eight years, daily coffee care. And I got black. individual leaves, which I immediately cut off and threw away. And the coffee tree thanked me with the first abundant flowering after so many years of caring for it. Now it bears fruit annually up to 350 - 400 pieces at a time. By the way, none of the coffee sprouts donated to their relatives survived, unfortunately.

As soon as the red coffee shell begins to dry out and acquire a slightly darkened color, I remove and clean the beans from the shell. Any ripe fruit is suitable for planting. It is better to destroy a very hard shell mechanically. I clean it before planting with my nails and do not use a chemical method. Read above.

Good afternoon, Vladimir! I attacked the forum and decided (for the first time) to write an appeal. I had two coffee trees 7 and 3 years old (mother and daughter) Both died. I cannot identify the pest. According to the description, it is similar to a mealybug: white cotton wool is located in the sinuses between the leaves and the trunk. But in the description, nowhere is it mentioned that it is sticky and stretches (just like cotton candy). Last year I bought 10 sprouts in the store. 3 died, the rest are growing. But again this infection. All my flowers are susceptible to this disease: myrtle, azaleas, succulents. And now I found it on thorny cacti. Maybe tell me what to do?

Svetlana, I had a problem with orchids, all the trunks and leaves were covered with small brown circles. Later I found out that it was a scale insect, like ticks, something. Than I just did not process the leaves and trunks, it was all to no avail. I had a disinfectant at home that is used in hospitals (hand disinfection). I took a little of this liquid into a spray bottle and sprayed the plants, and I didn’t forget to process the soil either, since then there have been no pests on the flowers! Maybe you can get rid of your problem as well? Try it, what if! Good luck!

I was also afraid for the coffee sprouts, which looked like frail little palms, but, never mind, many grew and turned into fruit-bearing trees. Began to bear fruit, mainly those, the thickness of the trunk in the lower part began to reach the thickness of the thumb. Unfortunately, the very frail and stunted sprouts did not survive. I marked the north direction on the pot and when dragging the coffee to other places, I always oriented it the same way. Well, I don't know how to treat coffee from blackening of the leaves. Tell me who knows.

If you need to bring citrus fruits from the cold into a warm room, then spilling an earthen coma with very warm (almost hot) water while spraying the crown with cold water will help to transfer stress. The crown reacts to a temperature rise quickly - the leaves begin to evaporate moisture and demand it from the roots. And the roots react slowly and cannot provide it immediately. The so-called "shock leaf fall" begins. Warming up the root system with simultaneous spraying of the crown with cold water makes it possible to bring the "tops" and "roots" to a "common denominator" in a very short time. While the roots are warming up and waking up, the heating of the crown is slowed down and there is a supply of moisture.
This, of course, is not about coffee, but suddenly it will help someone in solving blackening leaves after moving the plant from the street home.

coffee trees are very fond of iron, when transplanting into the ground, I add something iron (paper clips, staples, cloves), this is for the future, when it starts to rust, and I water it with a fertilizer containing chelated iron. The coffee tree does not tolerate drying out of the earth. At plus ten it already dies. Doesn't like being turned. this can be done no more than ten degrees a week and prefers the south and southeast side.

I think that as far as land and peat are concerned, competent sellers in stores and the Internet know about this, but about the fact that it is possible to pick off the leaves so that the coffee tree does not grow much upward, but becomes more heap, then I did so ... Even when the plants were 35-40 cm high, somehow the thought itself came to cut off the tops. And only later, when the plant began to rest against the ceiling, I, without any fear, cut off the top of the coffee. Somewhere 30 cm. For 4 years the tree has not grown up. At the moment, my coffee is preparing for a massive bloom. Spring. Lots of warm sun. I have coffee by the south window.

Coffee fruits ripen for a long time - from 9 to 11 months. There is no need to wait for them to fall off, but you need to cut off only when the fruits become uniformly red.Plucked fruits do not ripen on the window, like apples or tomatoes ...

My coffee tree was bought by a small bush. Five years later, it bloomed and I took off the first crop. I planted the beans in the same pot where the coffee grew. I don’t know the fate of that tree any more, it was gone by me (1.60cm). But I got the baby, which I planted. She is already ten years old, about 60 cm in height, has not yet bloomed. I'm waiting))
From the experience with the drying of the leaves, I understood several points. Leaves begin to dry at the tips, brown dryness can spread throughout the leaf. This is due to the excessive dryness of the air. It is necessary to humidify the room, especially in winter with centralized heating. If this happens, I trim the brown spots to preserve the leaf. Coffee doesn't like direct sunlight. Loves a shower, this is a tree for joy.
Good luck to everyone in raising your green pets *)))!

My sprout has grown from a grain. At the end of the stem there was a grain that cracked, but did not peel off and did not allow the leaves to open. So the sprout stood for several months. And a couple of days ago, this top with a grain began to darken and wilted. Maybe from waterlogging or someone otkot the window and it froze (the pot was on the windowsill)? Today I cut off the top with a grain, the bottom (about 1.5 cm high) is still alive. Tell me, is there a chance that the sprout will survive? How can I save him?

infusion of garlic with vodka, alcohol. then dilute with water and spray. The pests themselves can simply be blotted with a brush dipped in alcohol, vodka, etc.

The pests themselves must be caught and their legs removed. After that, they are guaranteed to stop harming within two days.

Hello dear owners of coffee trees.
My coffee this year gave a decent amount of beans, they are all ripe and now I think what to do with them? I read that after removing the shell, the coffee needs fermentation (soak in the sun for several days, constantly turning). Where can I find the sun in such an amount in St. Petersburg in March ?! Who knows what to do with the beans to taste coffee from their own plantation? Maybe just peel them and fry them? Thank you in advance

My baby is about 6-8 years old, the question is whether it can be cut off, since the ceiling of 2.8m does not suit him and he is almost, 5 cm is not enough, has already stuck into it, Out of experience, I also twisted it, rearranged it, and dreamed so that the berries grow, until he found out that he does not like such maneuvers, now the harvest hangs, not large but pleasant.
Once again the question is whether it is possible for him to cut the crown from the top in order to stop his growth upwards ATP.

You can stop growing in height by pinching.

Good day! My coffee lives for three years, took it in a small sprout, now it is fluffy about 30 cm long. Recently we decided to change the pot, so I transplanted it, after transplanting it wilted completely ... And the lower leaves turned yellow a little ... Watering and spraying regularly. Can you please tell me how we can help to save our favorite flower? Can I tear off leaves that are slightly hit or yellow?

I have 2 trees growing for 2.5 years. Grown yes 150 and 165 cm. One tree bloomed 2 times. Once there were 4 fruits, but only 3. ripened. And now 1. The lower leaves began to dry and fall off. What to do? on the upper branches, young leaves grow, and at the bottom, empty branches are obtained. Maybe they are hot?

My tree is already in its ninth year, two meters high, too, the leaves turn black yet I have never kissed another year, and then I will probably throw the skins with a banana into the pot.
