Many owners of private houses dream of pleasant green grass on their backyard, on which you can walk barefoot and where you can spend your vacation with family and friends. But in reality, a completely gloomy picture with an unkempt courtyard and a large number of very different "necessary" objects appears before your eyes more often. When a firm decision has been made - to create a lawn on the site, then first you need to be sure to familiarize yourself with the methods of creating it and the rules of care.
The quality and appearance of a grass lawn directly depends on how it is looked after. The "construction" is capricious and very vulnerable, but anyone who wants to keep it in perfect condition can do it.
Lawn creation methods
Sowing a lawn with seeds or spreading a grass turf carpet over the site is the choice of the site owner, but you need to know that each method has its positive and negative sides.
Sowing seeds
This method is much more economical, but it will require a lot of effort and patience. At first glance, it seems that sowing a lawn with seeds is very simple. First you need to purchase the correct seeds. Favorable time for sowing is March, April, May. Sowing of seeds is carried out on a wet surface of the earth to a depth of 2-3 cm, after which, with the help of a hand roller, the soil is rolled and abundant irrigation is carried out. The area of the future lawn must be constantly kept moist. Feathered friends who love to feast on seeds, as well as constantly growing weeds, deliver a lot of trouble. An unexpected problem in the form of illness may appear. It will take a long time to protect young shoots. The lawn will acquire its beautiful and desirable appearance about a year later.
Turf laying
Sod laying will require much more material resources and this work is very laborious. But it is worth it, because the lawn will acquire its decorative appearance within a month and a half after laying it. It should be borne in mind that purchased turf has a short shelf life and must be urgently decomposed in the selected area. It is not easy to acquire such a high quality coating. Very often, along with the beauty, numerous weeds settle on the site. This is one of the disadvantages of this method.
The seeded sod, rolled into rolls, easily rolls over the surface of the soil and is easier to care for. But there are also disadvantages - the site must be perfectly flat and clean. The choice of such planting material is still limited and the price of such material is very high.
Lawn care rules
Lawn mowing
Timely and regular haircut contributes to the formation of a beautiful and dense green coverage. Its frequency depends on the composition of the soil at the site, on the type of sown grass, on the season and weather conditions. The height of the lawn should be medium. Tall grass spoils the appearance of the lawn, and too low will lead to the appearance of bald spots, on which weeds or moss very quickly appear.
The procedure is carried out during the entire warm period - from mid-spring to mid-autumn. The frequency of haircuts in the summer months is every 3-4 days, and the rest of the time, once a week is enough.
Mulching
The mulching layer on the lawn helps to strengthen and restore it. It is recommended to apply mulch from leaf humus or peat over the entire surface around the end of October. One such procedure per year is very effective and contributes to the excellent appearance of the lawn and the preservation of its decorative effect.
Watering
The frequency and abundance of irrigation depends on the weather conditions in the area and the composition of the soil at the site. Sandy soil absorbs and absorbs water very quickly, so on hot summer days it is recommended to water the lawn every 3-4 days. In the cool season or on summer days with low air temperatures, three waterings per month will be sufficient. A good time for watering is early morning or evening after sunset. If a small puddle has accumulated on the surface of the lawn, you need to pierce the grass cover for better moisture passage.
