How to properly transplant an orchid

How to properly transplant an orchid

The orchid is considered a very difficult flower. And therefore, a novice florist is sometimes not able to care for this capricious plant. Usually, over-attention and improper orchid care is a common mistake, not a lack of it. This usually applies to almost all indoor plants.

For example, chlorophytum and hibiscus can still withstand everything and even gross mistakes, but for an orchid they can become fatal. There are many articles about orchids, and almost every one of them talks about the importance and rules of transplanting it. It is very important to transplant the orchid correctly and at a certain time, because otherwise it may simply die.

Orchid roots are very difficult and take a long time to recover, so there is no need to disturb this flower unnecessarily once again. Therefore, when you buy an orchid from the store, you do not need to immediately transplant it into a new pot. Such actions are very difficult for the orchid and can cause irreparable harm to it. It is recommended to transplant a plant as delicate as an orchid only in extreme cases.

When can you transplant an orchid?

For about two to three years, the orchid substrate can be suitable, and then it can be replaced. Therefore, you need to be guided by these standards and the orchid can be transplanted only once every two to three years. And then, by external signs, you yourself will know when to transplant the orchid.

The main signs for orchid transplant

The main signs for transplanting an orchid

  • If there is a lot of free space in the pot and the substrate has almost completely settled and crumpled.
  • If there is a noticeable smell of mold, dampness and rotting leaves.
  • If the pot becomes heavier after watering than before.
  • If the roots have darkened and turned brown and gray. Healthy roots are green. If you see root rot, then the plant needs to be urgently replanted!
  • If the orchid looks wilted.

If you notice that the substrate is a donkey, then you need to try to stretch it out until the time when the flowering period ends and the orchid begins to release new leaves and roots. It is then that the best time to transplant a plant, and then it will take root well.

How to properly transplant an orchid

To do this, you need to very carefully pull the flower out of the pot along with the earth. If you cannot do this, then it is better to cut the pot so as not to damage the plant. Then you need to place the orchid together with the substrate in a container with warm water so that it is completely soaked there.

Then, with the help of a shower, gently wash off the remnants of the substrate from the roots. Then you need to carefully examine the plant and remove all dead and damaged roots, and sprinkle the cut lines with charcoal. Next, put the flower on a paper towel so that it dries completely to the last drop of water.

How to properly transplant an orchid

During this time, you need to lay out a layer of expanded clay or ceramic shards about five centimeters high at the bottom of the pot so that the water does not stagnate, but passes freely to the bottom.

Then you can fill up the substrate with a height of five centimeters and place the prepared plant in it. A stake can be placed near it for a garter of hanging stems, if any. From above, you need to fill up the substrate and press it down with your hand so that it settles a little.

If necessary, you need to fix the orchid so that the roots take root well. After that, the pot must be immersed in water for a few minutes, and then let it drain well, and if the roots appear, then the substrate must still be poured.

The optimal substrate for an orchid is a mixture of charcoal, fern roots, bark, styrofoam, moss, peat and osmund. It is better to buy it ready-made in specialized stores.

My orchid has been blooming for a year now. This is accompanied by the appearance of more and more steles and roots, arrows with buds climb even from old shoots. The roots have long been outside the pot: both below and above. She more and more and does not stop. How to transplant ???

Zoya, why transplant? If the orchid is so "rushing" then it is good and no transplant is required yet.

If the arrow is dry, then yes - cut it off. If the arrow is still green, then in no case - the orchid can bloom again.

One of my orchids has been blooming on the same arrows for the seventh year, during which time it has added 1 or 2 leaves, and it blooms almost constantly. So never cut off the arrows, even if they look ugly for a while without flowers. I then plant some kind of decorative butterfly on them. But if the arrow begins to dry out (and this is immediately evident), I cut it off to the border of drying.

Good day. About a month ago I bought a blooming orchid. Sits in a transparent small pot and blooms. When to transplant it? Before that, there was an orchid, but it quickly took over and did not save it. Fresh green roots below and above began to dry. Help determine what this means? Can it be stored on the counter of the kitchen unit opposite the west-side window? All windows face the west side and in summer there will be very strong sun rays. So I put it on the kitchen set. I would also like to have a few orchids, but for now I'm afraid if this

To provoke an orchid to bloom, you need to create stressful conditions for it. Stop watering for two or three weeks and put it in some dark place for this time, then after two or three weeks put it back on the windowsill and she should throw out the peduncle

    Phalaenopsis orchid is an epiphyte.
The ideal composition for her in a pot would be pine bark in pieces! and that's it!

You should be careful when buying other types of orchids: they all need different substrates.

An abrupt change in temperature conditions can provoke an orchid to bloom. So, for example, a flower can be refrigerated for 15-20 minutes, these manipulations must be performed with a flower 2-3 times a day, for about a week. The result will not be long in coming. Good luck!

Hello. I want to transplant phalaenopsis. Do you need to rinse your roots in the shower? I wanted to take the orchid out of the old pot and, along with all the substrate and roots, transplant it into a new pot and sprinkle it with a new substrate. Has anyone done this? What are the results? Or is everything washed under the shower and into a new substrate? Thank.

    • Natalia
      April 11, 2016 at 03:45 PM Lily

And then what is the point of replanting? Be sure to remove the old soil. Even though I don’t wash it in the shower, it sprinkles so well. At the same time, inspect the roots, cut off all dry and rotten ones. And then you can already soak the roots (I soak in the Root) from this they will become more elastic and will not break when placed in a pot. And in no case take the soil purchased - there is nothing but dust, the roots will rot! Well-cooked pine bark is best. I also add a few pieces of charcoal and quite a bit of sphagnum moss. And do not ram the soil with your hand, as they say in the article, just tap the pot on the table, the bark itself wakes up in the voids. Yes, and drainage 5cm (!!!) Why? How big is the pot then needed? Through the cog, the water pours out perfectly into the pan. And at the expense of not replanting what was bought in the store until it fades, I also do not agree. I transplant all store flowers immediately. They don't even shed flowers. Very often in the purchased orchid under the "bottom" found foam rubber. If I waited until it fades, the roots would rot. The manufacturer puts it there so that the flowers can endure a long journey (increases the humidity) And in stores they immediately begin to water the flowers. So save your flowers immediately after purchase, if you do everything right - the orchid will not even notice the transplant.

    Hello!
First of all, I would like to know what kind of orchid you have? Phalaenopsis? Dendrobium? Cymbidum? Or something different? All of the above are quite often on sale in flower shops and could be at your home. However, all orchids hate to be transplanted and thrive in the same pot and substrate for several years. There may be several reasons for transplanting: the roots have rotted, the substrate has become too dense, the plant no longer fits in the pot (the latter refers, for example, to cymbidums).
Now about the peduncle: in phalaenopsis, it is not cut off after flowering, the plant forms new buds on old peduncles and, at the same time, can release new ones. So that flowering will only be more abundant if all flower stalks are preserved. In other types of orchids, flower stalks dry out after flowering and, of course, they can and should be cut off.

Hello! I am also interested in the question of how often an orchid needs to be watered, but I know that after watering it is not necessary that there is water in the pan, that is, when the water drains, it must be poured out of the pan, otherwise the roots will rot.

A flower shop worker advised me to transplant the orchid after flowering and carefully check at the base for the presence of a sponge. The sponge was really present, which caused rotting of the roots. I got rid of the sponge, transplanted it into the pine bark and my girl makes me happy without ceasing to bloom for the second year. has not yet faded, but she has released a new one and is already blooming. Now I enjoy the flowering of two peduncles. However, I arrange bath days for her. Once a week at night I immerse the pot in a baby bucket filled with water. Then I let it drain and so on until next week. And not only I so relax my phalaenopsis, but also cambria and oncidium. And everyone pleases with flowering.

After all, breeders plant orchids in synthetic sponges that rot from moisture and everyone who is not lazy lives there. How to grow new roots if EVERYONE has rotted (they gave me one such copy, I had to cut everything to the leaves. Now it's worth it, I don't know how to make the roots grow).
