Heptapleurum

Heptapleurum

Heptapleurum (Heptapleurum) is a fast-growing perennial that grows in the tropical latitudes of Asia and other southern regions. The plant belongs to the genus Araliev. The foliage is petiolate, oval or pointed in shape. The surface of the plates is smooth. Inflorescences look like whitish bunches-panicles. Indoor varieties bloom on rare occasions.

The similarity in the external structure of this plant is observed with sheffleroi, therefore, inexperienced growers are able to confuse them with each other. However, the Schefflera differs primarily in that it grows like a tree. Heptapleurum grows in the form of a branchy bush, if you separate the growth point on the main shoot. In addition, the leaves smell harsh like geranium flowers. Schefflera practically does not exude any odors during flowering.

Botanical sources describe three types of heptapleurum:

  • Geisha Girl - woody heptapleurum, which has rounded green leaves;
  • Hayata - the color of the leaves is presented in gray tones;
  • Variegata is a popular variegated species.

Caring for heptapleurum at home

With the cultivation of a heptapleurum in an apartment, there should be no problems if you take proper care of the flower.

Location and lighting

Heptapleurum needs a well-lit space, but it is more advisable to shade the leaves from direct rays when the weather is hot outside the window. Variegated species prefer bright lighting over regular monochromatic varieties. Lack of light can lead to discoloration of the records. Culture quietly coexists with other indoor plants. Flower pots will decorate any office, living room or winter garden. The bush does not tolerate cold air and drafts. The reaction to a sharp change in the microclimate in the room is the premature shedding of leaves.

Temperature

During the spring-summer period, the room temperature is kept at a moderate level. With the arrival of winter, containers with heptapleurum are transferred to a cooler place, where the temperature does not exceed 17 ° C.

Watering mode

Heptapleurum

In the summer, they provide abundant watering. It is important to monitor the moisture level in the soil. Stagnant water in the root zone causes foliage to fall off, therefore, the next irrigation procedure is started only after the soil dries up. For the winter, the plant is left alone, the amount of water is halved.

Air humidity

The plant prefers high humidity. Foliage loses its elasticity and attractiveness without spraying. It is recommended to periodically wash the greens from dust accumulation. Too humid microclimate provokes drying out and dying off of vegetative parts.

The soil

After purchasing a planting container, it is filled with a ready-made substrate intended for breeding indoor ornamental plants. Another way is to manually prepare the soil mixture. You will need to take the same amount of leaf, humus, peat and turf soil. All components are thoroughly mixed.

Features of feeding

Heptapleurum

It is necessary to fertilize the flower twice a month during the first half of the year, while the plant is actively growing greenery. Complexes of mineral origin or organic additives are used. In winter, feeding is temporarily stopped so that the bush can properly rest and gain strength.

Transfer

A heptapleurum transplant is arranged once a year in the spring. A strongly overgrown perennial with branched shoots is quite difficult to transplant into a new flowerpot, so it is allowed to simply renew the topsoil in an old pot. The presence of drainage material at the bottom of the planting container also plays an important role in reducing the risk of moisture stagnation in the root area.

Pruning rules

Large bushes need to be pruned systematically. The procedure is best done in early spring. Tree-like species of heptapleurum need strong support, since in enclosed spaces they can grow up to more than 2 meters. The stems tied to the support will not bend under the weight of the leaves in this case.

Reproduction methods of heptapleurum

Reproduction methods of heptapleurum

Heptapleurum is propagated using stem cuttings, which are located at the tops. The cuttings are immersed in a moist substrate to form roots. A mixture of peat and sand is used as a substrate. After that, the cuttings are stored in a warm, semi-darkened place with high humidity.

The second way to get a seedling is by sowing seeds. The procedure is carried out in loose soil. In order for the first shoots to appear quickly, the container is kept warm. When the seedlings get stronger, they are planted in permanent low pots.

Indoor views of heptapleurum will revive the most austere and boring interior. It will not be difficult to grow it in an office or apartment. Culture requires minimal care and attention. Even amateur flower growers who do not yet have rich experience in handling ornamental plants can cope with breeding.

Diseases and pests

Aphids and mealybugs occasionally settle on the leaves and stems of the heptapleurum. Spider mites are also a threat. The owners may face the listed problems if they neglect the rules of care.
