Early lettuce, radishes, green onions are crops that give their last harvest around the beginning of June. After them, the beds remain free, and the question arises as to what is better to plant in the vacated areas. You can, of course, sow them with siderates, but there are other options that can give an additional crop.
What to plant in the vacated beds
Potatoes
Early and early ripening potato varieties will have time to please with their harvest by the end of the warm season, if you plant it, for example, after the radish harvest in early June. Such varieties as Sprinter, Ariel, Belorussky early, Zaravshan, Timo and many others ripen very quickly, in just 40-60 days.
Green beans
Among the wide variety of beans, it is recommended to choose Caramel, Saksa or Rosinka. These varieties will thrive after an early salad or radish and green onions. They do not require a garter or additional support. Asparagus grows in small bushes, but yields good.
Cabbage
In June, only early ripening varieties of cabbage can be planted - these are Zemlyachka, Kazachok, Zarya, Express, Nevestka and others. From the moment of seed germination to harvesting, it takes from 80 to 90 days. True, such cabbage is not suitable for long-term storage.
You can plant this vegetable crop in the beds that have been freed from lettuce or onions. The planting method should be seed. Seeds must be planted in well-moistened soil and the beds must be kept under a dense cover (for example, lutrasil or agrospan) until shoots appear.
Beets and carrots
These two vegetable plants are very convenient for planting in June, as they are well stored for a long time, that is, they will fit for winter storage. It is necessary to choose late varieties and medium-ripening varieties and plant seeds after June fifteenth, not earlier.
Radish, turnip, daikon
Cruciferous vegetables will thrive after early potatoes, onions, garlic, green beans, early cucumbers and peas. It is very important to consider two important points when landing. First, the seeds must be planted at a shallow depth (no more than one centimeter). And secondly, when planting, it is necessary to observe the distance between the seeds, not less than 20-25 centimeters.
Cabbage
A good time to start growing Chinese cabbage is the last week of July and the first week of August. During this period, the beds are freed from garlic and peas. Peking cabbage, planted at this time, manages to grow before winter, is not afraid of small frosts, does not respond to a decrease in daylight hours and the amount of sun. If wrapped in food film, it will retain its beneficial taste until spring.
Dill and salad
These vegetable plants grow well even when planted late, and the dill greens look much fuller. Dill and lettuce grow very quickly and delight with their taste.
Arugula and radish
The end of summer is a good time to grow a second crop of radishes and arugula. There are almost no pests, the plants will no longer be damaged by the heat. These plants grow quite quickly and re-harvests will be around the corner.
Re-planting features
Experienced summer residents and gardeners recommend that when re-planting, heed some advice:
1. Since there is not much time for re-ripening of vegetables, it is worth germinating them before planting seeds and tubers. This will promote fast and friendly germination. It will also give an opportunity for the quality development of plants.
2. To be sure that you will have time to harvest the entire crop before the cold weather, try to use only the earliest varieties when replanting.
3. Do not use the vacated beds for replanting without preliminary processing. Preventive measures will protect the future harvest from fungal diseases. It is necessary to prepare a solution based on the Fitosporin preparation and thoroughly water all free beds.
4. It will not be possible to grow and collect a large and high-quality crop of vegetables in the beds where the previous crops have taken all the nutrients from the soil. Mulch will help save the day. It is recommended to mulch the beds with re-planting. After harvesting in autumn, the mulch layer can be left on the site. Some gardeners have time to sow and grow green manure plants in the fall. In both cases, the soil will receive its benefits and additional nutrition.
Persistent, patient and experienced summer residents will not miss the moment to get a second harvest. You just need to take into account our advice and recommendations.
