Avocado is an exotic evergreen plant. Many flower growers know that it is not easy to grow an avocado at home, much less wait for the harvest. Its fruits, unique in taste, could please more than one grower. But, unfortunately, avocado with fruits at home is rather an exception to the rule. Although they do not always plant an orange or persimmon seed, hoping for a quick result. You can wait for more than one year, hope and at the same time enjoy a fruit bush or tree.
If you wish, you can plant an avocado seed and patiently follow all the necessary rules for growing and caring. What if your dream comes true, and you wait for the harvest at your home?
How to grow an avocado from a seed
To grow this unusual overseas plant, you will definitely need a ripe avocado fruit. Only the seed of such a fruit has a great chance of germination. This process can be done in two ways:
- The first method (closed) is common and uncomplicated. The avocado seed should be thrust into the soil with its wide underside to a shallow depth (about 2 centimeters). When favorable conditions are created, it should germinate in about 30 days.
- The second method (open) is interesting and even, one might say, exotic.
Before planting in the ground, the seed must be germinated in water in a suspended position. First, it needs to be thoroughly washed and cleaned. Then, approximately in the middle of the bone along the line of the circle, you need to carefully drill three or four holes, into which you then need to insert thin wooden sticks (for example, matches or toothpicks). They will act as a support when we lower the wide lower part of the bone into a container of water. These sticks, like clamps, will hold the bone at the required height. The main thing is to constantly monitor the amount of water in the container. The bottom of the bone should always be in the water.
Instead of water for sprouting avocado seeds, you can use special polymer granules (hydrogel). This polymer material can hold large amounts of water for a long time. In this method, it is very convenient, you do not need to follow the level.
It will take only 20-30 days, and the first young roots will appear, and then the sprout. The seed will be ready for planting in the ground when the roots are 4 centimeters long.
First you need a small flower pot with large holes. The earth doesn't have to be dense. It must be well loosened to ensure the necessary air and moisture exchange. The stone is planted in the soil so that two-thirds of its part is on the surface of the soil. There is no need to remove the shell on the bone.
Avocados - growing and caring at home
Location and lighting
Avocado is a light-loving plant, but partial shade will suit it. It must be protected from direct sunlight. If your house or apartment has a room with west-facing windows, then such a window sill will be the perfect place for this fruit.
Temperature
Since the tropics are home to avocados, it naturally loves warmth. In the event of a sharp drop in temperature or the slightest draft, the plant will begin to show its displeasure - all the leaves will immediately fall off. Therefore, even in warm summer weather, it is undesirable to take it outside.
And in the room, too, a constant temperature must be maintained. In the warm season, the high room temperature will be favorable for the avocado, but in the cold winter time, 20 degrees Celsius will be enough for it.
The plant also has a dormant period in winter. If in winter the temperature in the room drops to 12 degrees, then the avocado will immediately react - it will drop the leaves and switch to the "hibernation" mode. But with proper care and a constant temperature balance, this cannot happen. This tropical plant is considered evergreen.
Watering rules
Watering avocados at home should be regular and abundant, but taking into account the temperature and the season. Over-watering can be harmful. It is watered more often in summer than in winter. After the topsoil has dried, it should take a couple more days before you start watering the plant. Only its upper part dries immediately, and the moisture necessary for the avocado remains inside the pot for about two more days.
Air humidity
Air humidity is also of great importance. The air in the room is almost always dry, and this is very harmful for this plant. Spraying daily will help solve the problem. It is very important that during such water procedures, only the air near the avocado is humidified, but not the plant itself. Even small droplets should not fall on its leaves.
There is another way of moistening - this is a special tray for a pot with moistened expanded clay.
Top dressing and fertilizers
From September to March, the plant does not need feeding. But the rest of the time, once a month, the avocado must be fed with the fertilizer recommended for citrus fruits or any other complex dressing.
Avocado transplant
In nature, avocados grow up to 20 meters in height. Although at home it will not reach such heights, it grows quite actively and requires frequent transplantation. Very soon the first small pot will be too small for him. As soon as the tree grows up to 15 centimeters, it's time to transplant it into a large container. At a young age, avocados are transplanted every year, and then it can be transplanted once every three years.
The land in which it grows is of great importance for the development and growth of a plant. Specifically, an avocado needs any loose and light earth, but not sour. It would be good to add wood ash or dolomite flour to such soil.
When transplanting a plant into a new pot, use the transfer method. Carefully carry the tree along with the clod of earth.
You can make your own potting mix that is good for avocado. To do this, you will need: peat (or humus), garden soil and coarse river sand. All components must be mixed in equal parts.
Pruning
This tropical plant at home may well become a decorative decoration of the room. True, this will require a little experience in floriculture. For example, you can grow several plants from avocado seeds and plant them all together in one flower pot. In the meantime, the plants are young and flexible, you can intertwine their stems with a pigtail.
So that the plant does not stretch in height, but acquires splendor in the form of lateral shoots, it must be pinched. This procedure can be carried out only when the tree has a sufficient number of leaves (at least eight). First, pinch the top of the plant, this promotes the development of lateral branches. And after they are sufficiently formed and acquire their own leaves, you can pinch them too.
Pruning is done in early spring. It is necessary to improve the growth and development of the plant, as well as to form the crown you need. It can be completely different. It all depends on the imagination of the grower.
Diseases, pests and other problems
Avocados, like all houseplants, are afraid of the same pests - shield and spider mite... The gluttonous spider mite can not only destroy all the leaves on the plant, but can also transfer various diseases to other indoor flowers. The scale insect feeds on plant sap. After its appearance, only dry leaves remain. You can fight such pests with various folk methods or insecticidal preparations.
Among the diseases, the main danger for avocados is powdery mildew.
Other problems may arise during the growing process:
The tips of the leaves dry out. Reasons - watering rules are not followed (lack of moisture), insufficient air humidity. It is necessary to establish regular watering (only after the top layer of the earth dries out) and humidify the air in the room using spraying.
Leaves are falling. The reasons are drafts and a drop in air temperature in the apartment. It is necessary to maintain an optimal temperature regime in the room and avoid drafts.
Paleness of leaves. The reasons are lack of lighting. It is necessary to find a suitable place for the plant or arrange additional (artificial) lighting for it, especially in winter.
Tell me, what about the indoor avocado if it drops the leaves? They are green, fresh, but the upper ones are lowered, although the lower ones "stand". The plant stands on the south window, in partial shade. Air humidity and temperature are good, the room is constantly running a purifier-humidifier, there are no drafts.
It's quite normal. The leaves of the avocado are quite large, which is why they are omitted. And the lower ones are standing because they have not yet grown to the required size.
Tell me how much the pot should have?
What to do if I just transplant the avocado from the jar, but the leaves are only at the top, and the stem is at the bottom.
To give Avakada the strength and growth of a flower, you need to wate a light tea every day and after 4-5 days see for yourself which leaves have become bright, wide, large and will not have clichés, which means (LEAVES DO NOT DRY) do not be afraid this tree loves water!
Don't mislead people. Avocados do not tolerate stagnant water. Dryness of the soil will survive for two days. Leaves may not dry out from ticks, as you say, and in general you have a strange statement. The leaves dry out from dry air, a draft, the plant is actually tropical, maybe it needs minerals, and, of course, all sorts of pests, but not mites.
Pour more beer! Maybe not an avocado, a tangerine duck will grow.
Most likely, they lack moisture. This happens in the summer. Decrease the watering interval.
the avocado grew simply by planting the seed in the ground, sprouted after three months, now a sprout has appeared, waiting for the heat to see the first sprouts
I have been sprouting my seed in water for six months! She was already desperate and decided to throw it away, but she released the root, now the roots are more than 4 cm, it's time to plant!
if the leaves of the avocado have dropped - he is thirsty, pour some water into the pan and you will see that after an hour the leaves will rise. I have about 10 avocados growing in pots and all are different, there are with small leaves, and there are with large
Please tell me, the green leaves are straight, but for some reason they are twisted. New ones grow up above. Watered 2 times a week. Maybe you need to fertilize?)
I decided to do an experiment, brought avocado seeds and shesek (medlar) from Israel, waited a long time, and now there are sprouts. the avocado is already 20 cm long, 4 pieces have sprouted. I planted one in a separate pot, I'm afraid to transplant the rest.my loner began to wither away, so that the rest of the sprouts should grow next to other plants. I wonder what happens. good luck to all.
I dug an avocado seed deep enough in a pot to a medlar (a young sprout), germinated in 1 month, it grows quickly already 10-15 centimeters in 2 weeks
I planted the bone back in November right in the ground, was silent all winter, and in the spring it gave a sprout. I take photos from time to time. Now the plant is already 20cm, the leaves are large. Sometimes they go down if I don't water for a long time. On some, the tips are dry, maybe there is not enough food?
I can't attach a photo.
By the way, I just put it in a baby bucket. Earth in layers, expanded clay, hydrogel, sand, earth from the forest. There is no drainage hole, it’s even better. excess water goes into the ground to the level of expanded clay, and part of it is taken by the hydrogel. I water a glass of water 1-2 times a week, I create a puddle. Within a few seconds, water seeps into the ground. I thought about fertilizers, but I don't know what to feed.
I bought a soft ripe avocado. She buried the bone by two-thirds, prepared to wait several months. The sprout sprouted in 10 days. I took the earth from a flower bed, which was quite fertilized. The plant is not even a year old, has grown by a meter, 46 leaves. Yesterday I pinched it. One transplant. Now I have it in a three-liter plastic bucket. Window to the south, using a gauze curtain in the sun. I water it often, it "hangs its wings" differently. The soil is compacted from frequent watering, the lump in the middle is dry and hard. Began to water in a different way. I put the bucket in a basin of water with a gap, not tight. I take it out when the soil gets wet to the top. Such watering from below through the drainage hole lasts for five to six days. So don't hurt to wrap yourself up with leaving. It will grow by itself, only do not interfere. Actually, did anyone wait for flowers at least?
Strange has been written about thermophilicity and soil. My avocado stood on the balcony from spring until yesterday. The temperature periodically dropped to +6 - not a single leaf fell. The soil, apparently, is acidic - it is overgrown with moss. Now the plant is just over 160 cm long and continues to grow rapidly.
Ahphpx up to 15 centimeters at home, after transplanting my avocado grew almost 80 cm 😀 tell me, is this normal?
I planted 9 seeds in the water for fun, there was no shift for a long time. I waited a month or two and just changed the water. After about 3-4 months, 3 seeds out of 9 began to grow roots, the rest did not. I planted 3 seeds, of which only one emerged, and now, the tree is already 30 cm in height, from one bone there are two stems and a lot of large leaves. The greens grew quickly, the tree was about a year old, maybe a little more. Now the leaves have begun to turn yellow and dry from the ends, although watering is constant, it is standing on the window, perhaps it is in the drafts, I think to look for him another place in the apartment
What about him?
It looks like your avocado is lacking in lighting.
Thanks for the answer! Indeed, at home, the sun's rays practically do not fall, I transported him to work, the sun is constantly there, do you think it will help? Or is it already pointless?
Well, it definitely won't be worse)
Thank you very much 😊
But my leaves are not there, only white flowers and began to darken. Do you think it is cold, overflowed or underfilled?
What fertilizers do they need?
This is an inflorescence! )) A small miracle about which you. probably already guessed and understood. Because after a while we saw a sprout from the side, similar to sprouts from photographs) A small miracle, but absolutely real, tk.you will not find anywhere a record that an avocado blooms in a pot, but here - an inflorescence immediately from a stone. Of course, he will not have enough strength to really bloom, but it will attract for a long time with its eroticism))
This is what I have, the bud has been unfolding for 9 months. And in nature it blooms for six months. And, on the side - an ordinary sprout with leaves. In my opinion, it is a great rarity - I have not seen it on the Internet.
Share what happened to the inflorescence next?
I have grown this
We guess mutation, disease or wonderful inflorescence
Agree. I planted it in March and saw it in November. I didn't even hope. Joy cannot be conveyed. Until the leaves are gone
I have it like this, the lower leaves dried up, cut off, from what I read I realized that there is not enough moisture in the air ... .. now I regularly spray the air around ...
My avakodo quickly gave roots. I water it every day grows very fast
Wow, really really fast! ))
Avocado is about five years old. The leaves periodically darken, but that's okay (a draft from an open window, and in the fall it brought it from the balcony late, a lot of leaves are gone), but now fresh leaves have withered. I suspect overflow. What's the best way to revive a plant?
My avocado is about one and a half meters in height, we plan to grow it to 2, tell me, if you pinch it, will it start branches? on the floor, immediately dismissed more leaves) he is about 2 years old. The longest waited 2-3 months for the root of the bone, and then, like a mad popper), they did not fertilize.
I stuck the seeds from the tasteless and unripe avocados into the ground. I didn't water it very much. Here is the result one year later.
Eh, I would have known I hadn't thrown out so many bones. My first bone gave a root very quickly, after a week somewhere. There were still several seeds of different varieties, but I thought that they would not germinate, and threw them out after 3 weeks (((. And the first sprout was about 2 months old, standing in the water, 25 cm already
Mine is about 9 years old) I planted a bone in the ground after preparing sushi - and now it has been growing for how many years. Why not worry! And moving and pruning ... At first it was with a support, tk. bent strongly, then removed, but still grows on its side) In winter, the leaves dry a lot, sometimes fall, but in the spring I cut off all the ugly ones, and it grows further. Sometimes I shorten the branches too. The pot is already small, so the earth dries up quickly, leaves the leaves immediately. Loves good watering.
Cool! Cool!
From my observations of avocado:
1. Drafts and wind quickly destroy the foliage of the tree. The foliage simply dries up, and in this case, spraying the foliage will no longer save.
2. It is better to plant the bone immediately in the ground in a pot. The bone can be immersed in the ground at 3/4 of its height; it germinates faster in the ground than in water.
3. The root of the avocado tree is very fragile and sensitive, grows very long, so it is advisable to plant the seed (or small bore) immediately in a large, spacious, strong and heavy pot. Periodically, as necessary, change the top layer soil. And you can not change the land, but just occasionally add fertilizers.
4. The tree does not like changing places. The reaction to a change of location may be foliage falling.
5. Avocado trees grow very quickly.
I wondered how long this monster would grow in a glass ...
He is already 4 months old and is still suspended in a champagne glass. About 15 centimeters long ... roots ... and a tree too ... is this normal?
I don't know how to plant, I'm afraid to screw it up.(Maybe start with a layer of hydrogel, sand and earth?)
Stood all winter on a windowsill in a draft (the window overlooks a poorly illuminated part of the house) and sprouted normally.
Sprouted under the dome, took it off, the leaves began to dry out, covered it again ... I think I need to open it for a while so that I can adapt it. It grows very quickly.
This one grew up, was planted on January 5, 2019 right in the ground,
This is what I have, the bud has been unfolding for 9 months. And in nature it blooms for six months. And, on the side - an ordinary sprout with leaves. In my opinion, it is a great rarity - I have not seen it on the Internet.
Yesterday I transplanted my own, and planted a bone to it. 2 more sprout.
And I have this kind of avocado .. I worked in water, a long powerful root grew and the same sprout but without leaves, some rudiments of leaves on the entire trunk. A couple of months ago, they were transplanted into the ground - lateral branches began to grow, but the leaves are so small.
What about him? He is not at all like those avocados, like all
I planted the avocado in a pot almost 2 months ago, now it is already more than 15 cm (I plan to transplant it in the near future), but there was such a problem that the veins on the leaves turned brown, and several leaves generally turned up. The temperature is normal, I water it even more often than once every 10-15 days, the earth dries out quickly, the humidity seems to be normal too. Please tell me what to do?
My bone sprouted very quickly in the water, maybe in a week. He's a little less than a year old, cut it a couple of times. Growing very fast
A year ago, I salted an avocado sprout. It grows well, once I did not keep track of it and the leaves dried up in the sun. This year, a second sprout appeared from the seed remaining in the ground. But during transplantation, the cat made its contribution and broke off the sprout from the half of the bone, on which the roots remained. It's a pity ... (The sprout itself has reached ten centimeters. Now I wonder if there is a chance to root the sprout, or that another bone will sprout from the bone left with the roots sprout?
And here's how it grows. I can't understand what and who it is :) Help with advice :)
Alien?
Here is mine, what's wrong with him? ((
Little moisture
The flower is over a year old. This is what I think is a flower. And the avocados themselves are already more than two years old. The leaves turn black - apparently there is not enough moisture and light.
Tell me what happened to him, at first the leaves fell off, then they turned black, transplanted into another pot today, the roots are not rotten, and also the expanded clay that lay at the bottom, it feels like he sucked them under himself, sorry for thawing
Hello! Request for help! I bought a grafted avocado from the Dominican Republic, it took 46 days to Vladivostok, survived. I have already had a couple of months, it was growing, but from the top it began to turn black and dry. I cut it off 4 times already, I treated the cut site with a special paste, after a couple of days the blackness again drops below and gives rise to strong, formed leaves. I had to cut it again. But it also turns black down. I'm afraid the whole vaccine will be bent. WHAT TO DO???
I, too, would start to turn black and dry after the Dominican Republic But seriously, adjust watering and humidity!
What to do if red spots appear on the avocado bone. Planted about 2 hours ago
If you peeled the bone from the shell, these are just the places where you touched the bone itself, turned red - it's okay 🙂
Good day! Tell me, is it normal that the avocado bone has shrunk (one half). The plant is over 2 years old, and I just can't create comfortable conditions for it.
Yes, good. Then it will completely disappear. You can separate it yourself if you give in
Help me please! What is the best way to revive an avocado. At first, the leaves screamed, and then the top began to turn black. Whether to trim or not. Another avocado has also shed its leaves and withers away. Could it be pests and what is the best way to feed? Is it possible to revive with peroxide (1 tbsp. L per 1 liter of water) or, on the contrary, can harm the plant. It is unclear until the end blew, and violated sexually or some other factor played. Now look, perhaps a small leaf is breaking through, but it is not yet clear. And where blackening, leaves also began to break through, but then dried up and turned black. Is it worth replanting to a larger pot now or not ...?
This is what the blackened top looks like
And this is the bone itself and the soil. Incomprehensible yellowish-white coating in the corner of the pot
It grows from the eaten fruit and rejoices. Yesterday I did the pruning. Bald, but contented. So I cut it off so that I could gain strength, there are a lot of kidneys, and the crown will be beautiful a little later.
If there are young buds at the bottom, urgently change the soil and cut off 5 millimeters above the youngest bud. No drafts and moderate lighting without direct sunlight. And epin will not hurt. Will come to life, do not worry.
Your pot is still normal, you have not created the best conditions for it.
Thank!
But I have this
Can you please tell me how it can be transplanted into a pot? 🌞🥺
Take and plant 😁
I waited for a miracle for almost 2 months. I planted the bone on 4 toothpicks, about 1-2 mm deep, and put it in a jar of water. When the bone burst and a white root appeared, about 4 cm, transplanted into a pot. The plant immediately flooded in front of our eyes. Try it and you will succeed!
So many problems for everyone, my girlfriend stuck it in the soil and grew, and quickly enough
And I have these avocados. The big one is just over a year old, recently launched two branches. I haven't pinched it yet. It has very huge and wide leaves, larger than my podona. ... When he first sprouted, my cat ate him. But I covered him with duct tape and oh, miracle, he grew together and grew so huge. During the winter, I did not lose a single leaf, the only thing is that the winter leaves are very small from a lack of light. This one grows in cactus soil. In another pot there are 3 more avocados, there were 5, two died. And they have completely different leaves, narrow and long. They are planted 4 months later. And these have soil for vegetables and herbs. All avocados are of different varieties. So far so good.
Tell me what happened to him
None of my friend dries.
Everything that the Internet recommends is a lie.
You don't even need to feed.
I say right away that my advice will be paid, I had to understand and cut off dry leaves for three years.
Here is another photo, well, in order to understand how much the plant was tormented and tormented himself.
Less than a year passed between the planting of the seed and the appearance of the fruit. I regret that I did not read about such subtleties before, did not know that you can braid the stems, now it is too late
3 months. It grows in height, and the leaves are dumb, some kind. What could be the problem?
Who knows what the problem is?
Also, these are the leaves on top
I reduced the watering and the problem went away. In some places of the leaf, holes formed in place of the yellow spots.
Recently I planted an avocado .. one bone directly into the ground, one in a second way. In the ground, it immediately grew faster .. what I transplanted from the water, only a sprout appeared. I planted it at the same time ..
Good day! Perhaps some trace elements are missing! Try fertilizing. From spring to early autumn, top dressing is recommended for almost all indoor plants, so you will definitely not go wrong! I fertilize everything with saltpeter, at the rate of 1 teaspoon per 10 liters of water. Now I will try to show you my handsome man.
Good day!!! Sprouted 4 seeds at the end of autumn 2019, germinated from 1 to 3 months, all grow together. It didn't work out very nicely, the window is east. Recently, I cut off the top of the largest one and transplanted it into a pot with automatic watering, the kids immediately began to grow more actively, and 5 kidneys became more active on the large one. Glad to chat !!! Good luck to all!!!
Hello. A month ago, they planted avacado seeds in the ground. And that's what has grown in a month. All sprouts are different. One has a flower in general, as I understand it. For some reason, one sprout is all twisted. Watering, light is all the same. Maybe the genes are bad 🙈
The strongest root sprouted, and the sprout was very weak
Tell me, who knows what the problem is?
Can you only save such an avocado? First the leaves sank and then they turned black
Hello! Tell me, what's wrong with mine? 2 days stood on the balcony, and behold. The leaves are released and some are in the holes. How to get rid of rodent midges?
Tell me why he is as sluggish all the time
My avocado is 6 months old.
The avocado was planted 3 months ago. Grows upward with characteristic white leaves. What could it be? Light, moisture is enough.
Tell me, who faced such a situation?
